Dear is built around a deliberate sequence: gather and shape ideas before you write a single sentence of your draft. Outline is where you think; Write is where you compose. Stitch is the bridge that turns your plan into a draft canvas without discarding a single idea.Documentation Index

Outline mode
Outline is the left tab on the workspace toolbar. When you open it, Dear gives you two sub-areas accessible from the switcher at the bottom of the screen.- Explore
- Outline
Explore is your staging area. Type short notes, speak aloud (live transcription), or paste in raw material. Every note you submit becomes an index card — a discrete idea with an AI-generated header and a topic tag that groups related cards together.Use Explore when you are still discovering what you want to say. There is no pressure to be coherent here. Messy fragments are exactly what this area is designed for.
Write mode
Write is the right tab on the toolbar. It is a focused markdown canvas where you type, edit, and refine your piece. Write mode features:- Tab inline completions — press Tab to accept an AI continuation of your current sentence.
- Doc width slider — adjust the line width to suit your reading preference.
- Focus mode — collapse the toolbar and surrounding chrome for distraction-free drafting.
AI completions in Write extend what you have already typed. Dear does not generate text on your behalf — it continues from your cursor, and you decide whether to accept it with Tab or ignore it and keep typing.
How Stitch connects the two modes
Stitch is the step that converts your ordered index cards into a structured draft in Write. When you click Send plan to Write from the Outline sub-tab, Dear transforms your ordered cards into heading and body blocks in the Write editor, then switches you to Write automatically. Your index cards are not deleted after stitching. You can return to Outline at any time to add more cards, adjust the structure, or re-stitch.Switching between modes
Click Outline or Write in the toolbar at any point. Dear saves your cards, your draft, and your active mode — everything persists when you switch tabs or close the document.Index cards
