# Sign in to Dear: password-free magic link

> Dear uses a password-free magic link flow via email. Enter your address, click the link in your inbox, and you are signed in. No password needed.

Dear uses magic link authentication — you enter your email address, receive a sign-in link, and click it to authenticate. There is no password to create or remember. Depending on how Dear is set up, you may be able to use the app without signing in; in that case your work is saved locally in the browser.

## Sign in

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the sign-in dialog">
    In Dear, click your account avatar or the user menu in the top-right corner of any page. Select **Sign in** from the menu.

    The sign-in dialog opens with a single email field.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Enter your email address">
    Type your email address into the field and click **Send link**.

    You will see the message: *Check your email for a sign-in link.*
  </Step>

  <Step title="Click the link in your email">
    Open your inbox and find the email from Dear. Click the sign-in link inside it.

    The link opens Dear in your browser and signs you in automatically. You are returned to where you left off.
  </Step>
</Steps>

<Note>
  Magic links expire after a short time. If you wait too long before clicking, request a new link by repeating the steps above.
</Note>

## Local-only mode

In some configurations of Dear, sign-in may not be available. If that is the case, the sign-in dialog will show a notice and the **Send link** button will be disabled. You can still use Dear — create documents, write, and capture ideas — but your data is stored only in the browser on your current device and will not sync across devices or sessions.

<Warning>
  In local-only mode, clearing your browser data will permanently delete your documents. There is no cloud backup.
</Warning>

## Sign out

To end your session, go to **Account Settings** (`/account/settings`). In the **Danger zone** section, click **Sign out**. You are signed out immediately and redirected to the document list.

Your documents remain saved in the cloud and will be available the next time you sign in.
